Compounding
is the art and science of preparing customized medications for
patients that are not commercially available. The practice dates
back to the origins of pharmacy. The pharmacist used to make
medication for each specific patient. Since the evolution of
pharmaceutic al
manufacturing the role of the pharmacist has changed dramatically.
However, in more recent years, prescription compounding has made
resurgence. Modern technology and innovative research has allowed
the pharmacist to customize medications to meet the unique needs
of patients.
Our
specially trained staff enables Brewerton Pharmacy to
offer the unique advantages of a compounding pharmacy to the most
important people we know, YOU, our friends and patients.
While the industry is geared for the needs of the masses, we at
Brewerton Pharmacy are committed to individuals. Our staff is
eager to work with you and your physician to insure that the
medication you require is tailored to your specific needs.

Bio-identical
Hormone Replacement Therapy |
|
Bio-identical
Hormone Replacement Therapy is the natural way to bring your body
into hormonal harmony from peri-menopause through menopause. Your
body is changing much the way it did when
you
were a teenager going through puberty. During peri-menopause and
menopause you may experience hot flashes, sleeplessness, anxiety
or depression, decreased libido, or vaginal dryness. You may
experience one or two of these symptoms or all of them but you do
not need to suffer. These symptoms indicate a hormone imbalance
that can be corrected with natural hormone replacement.
With a simple
saliva test or a blood test, we can determine what hormones you
are deficient in. Then we can re-establish your hormonal balance.
There are actually three estrogens present in your body. They are
estrone (e1), estradiol (e2), and estriol (e3). Depending on your
symptoms you may be deficient in one or all of the estrogens.
Estrogens are responsible for many things in your body. They
include the following: |
|
|
|
There is also
another hormone called progesterone, not to be confused with
progestins. Progestins are a synthetic progesterone actually shown
to cause cancer. Progesterone is a naturally occurring hormone,
which actually has protectant properties in the body. Progesterone
is necessary to regulate or balance estrogen levels in your body.
A woman should never be given estrogen without progesterone. If
you do not take progesterone with estrogen you can get what is
called “estrogen dominance”. Estrogen dominance can be responsible
for fibrocystic breasts, hot flashes, sleeplessness, anxiety or
depression, dry hair or skin, vaginal thinning or dryness, and
decreased libido. Progesterone has many uses that include the
following: |
|
|
|
There is
another group of hormones called androgens, which include
testosterone and DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone). DHEA is an
androgen precursor from which the body can derive testosterone.
Androgens are hormones that are important to the integrity of
skin, muscle, and bone in both males and females, and have an
important role in maintaining libido. |
|
Natural
hormone replacement is also used in patients that have had a
hysterectomy. Whether you’ve had a total or a partial hysterectomy
it does not mean you do not need hormones. Your body still
produces some estrogen from other areas of your body after you’ve
had a hysterectomy. Estrogen is still produced in adipose tissue
(fat stores) and your adrenal glands. However, your ovaries are
the only place that progesterone is produced. Therefore, if you’ve
had your ovaries removed your body is no longer making
progesterone. If you no longer are producing progesterone, you
will most likely develop “estrogen dominance”. Estrogen dominance
can produce the intolerable symptoms of menopause as described
above. There is no need to suffer with bothersome symptoms. |
|
The key to
any hormone regimen is balance. Let us help you to achieve that
balance and get your life back on track. Bio-identical hormone
therapy can help you feel better the natural way. We will work
together, along with your practitioner to get you feeling good.

Our pets are
like members of our families, just as our children are. As a full
service
pharmacy, we also provide medications to our furry or feathered
friends as well. At
Brewerton
Pharmacy we compound or “make” medications for all sorts
of pets. If anyone has tried to give a cat a medication, you know
this is no easy feat. So, we make transdermal gels
that can be rubbed into their ears. Your cat will be jumping into
your lap to receive its next dose of medicine. We also can flavor
medications that will taste better for your pets. We can make a
Zithromax suspension that is fish flavored to treat cat-scratch
disease in cats. For dogs, we offer liver flavored treats that can
be medicated as well. At Brewerton Pharmacy,
we’ve also made a mixture of applesauce and an antibiotic for a
horse. Below are some examples of our most commonly made
veterinary compounds. |

So, whatever
unique needs your pet may have, we at Brewerton Pharmacy can
accommodate each and every one. |

Chronic Pain Management |
|
Chronic pain,
sports injuries and other pain related medical conditions are key
reasons patients seek medical attention. At one time or another
we've all suffered pain, whether it be a sprain,
back or sports injury and it's very unpleasant. Chronic pain can
affect a person not only physically, but also mentally and
emotionally, as well. Many people lose time at work due to chronic
pain and injuries. Furthermore, a large number of patients cannot
take traditional medications because of either drug interactions
or unwanted side effects. Commercially available oral
prescriptions such as muscle relaxants or pain medications can
make a person extremely drowsy and unable to work or drive. So, we
at Brewerton Pharmacy, are breaking through traditional treatments
and compounding transdermal prescription medications for pain
management. |
|
The
word transdermal means through (trans) the skin (dermal).
Transdermal or transcutaneous drug delivery avoids the
gastrointestinal tract and hepatic first-pass metabolism, thus
lowering the amount of drug that circulates in the body and leads
to fewer side effects. The method of delivering medications
through the skin is not a new concept. There are commercially
available medications in patch form such as lidocaine or fentanyl
to treat pain, however they only contain one medication. At
Brewerton Pharmacy, we have the unique ability to combine one or
several ingredients into a transdermal gel. The strengths and type
of medication can be tailor made to treat the symptoms of each
individual patient. |
|
There are
several types of drugs that may be used in transdermal
preparations. Many prescribers choose to combine two or more types
of medications in a transdermal gel. |
 |
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): While NSAIDs
act quickly and can relieve mild pain their real therapeutic
purpose is to reduce inflammation or swelling in joints and
tissues. Some examples of NSAIDs include ketoprofen,
ibuprofen, naproxen and piroxicam. |
 |
Muscle
relaxants: A muscle relaxant reduces the contractility of
the muscle by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses.
Common examples include cyclobenzaprine and carisoprodol. |
 |
Anesthetics: Anesthetics relieve pain, and when used
transdermally it can be applied directly to a specific
problem area. The most commonly used transdermal pain
relievers are lidocaine, benzocaine, and tetracaine. |
 |
Adjunct
pain relievers: These medications are not anesthetics but
reduce pain in different ways by blocking transmission of a
pain signal to the brain. These include antidepressants such
as amitriptyline. Gabapentin is another drug that is used in
pain management. It works by mimicking GABA
(gamma-aminobutyric acid), an inhibitory neurotransmitter.
Clonidine is a blood pressure medication that blocks pain by
stimulating alpha-adrenoreceptors in the brain, resulting in
reduced sympathetic outflow from the central nervous system. |
|
|
There are
long lists of medical conditions that a person would benefit from
using the transdermal preparations. Some of the most common
conditions include: |
|
|
|
Typically, the transdermal gels are applied three times a day to
the affected area and rubbed in well. Once the pain is under
control, some patients may be able to use the medication less
often or as needed. |
|
The combinations of medications that can be incorporated into
transdermal gels are endless. However, there are several formulas
we compound for patients on a daily basis. The examples are listed
below. |
|
|
|
When applied topically, these everyday medications enable
healthcare providers more treatment options with fewer side
effects or drug interactions for patients. We at Brewerton
Pharmacy can work together with you and your practitioner to find
the treatment combination that is right for your pain relief. If
you’d like more information on transdermal pain relief, please
feel free to call our pharmacy anytime. |
